MEET RUBY!

Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio)

Ruby is an Eastern Screech Owl and is approximately 9 years old.

Ruby came to us from a rehab in Wisconsin where she was hit by a car during her first year of life.  Her left eye was damaged from the incident, and she is now partially blind in that eye which makes her ineligible to be released back into the wild.   Ruby has become one of our most popular educational birds!

Ruby weighs about 8 oz or half the weight of a water bottle.   Her diet consists of one mouse a night and she will only eat white mice.

The tufts on top of Ruby's head are commonly mistaken for her ears, although they are not.  These tufts are actually to help her camouflage, and her real ears are holes on the sides of her head, hidden underneath feathers.

Eastern Screech Owls can be found in North Carolina, as well as many other states.  However, they are misappropriately named because they do not actually screech.  Their natural communication is a beautiful trill sound.
