MEET CAPTAIN JACK!
Barred Owl (Strix Varia)
Captain Jack is a male Barred Owl and is approximately 9 years old. Barred owls are one of the most common owls found in North Carolina.
Captain Jack came to us from Cape Fear Raptor Center on the coast of North Carolina after he was hit by a car, which deflated his right eye. He was left with only one eye and is not eligible to be released back into the wild. Jack can still see very well out of his left eye but must be carefully approached on his right side as to not startle him.

Jack's current diet consists of three mice a night and the occasional quail, both of which mimic what he would eat in the wild. Jack weighs just 1.5 pounds, he is ALL feathers and fluff! Jack has over 9,000 feathers, more than a bald eagle.

Jack has become one of AWOLC's best educational birds. He has come far in his training and is a favorite among the program staff here.
